When a boom truck is the right call

  • Rooftop HVAC units on single-story retail, restaurants and offices.
  • Roof trusses and beams for new homes, barndominiums and additions.
  • Signs, light poles and small towers.
  • Material placement: shingles, block, steel bundles and pallets to a roof or upper floor.
  • Hot tubs, generators, transformers and similar compact heavy items.

Capacity depends on reach

A boom truck's tonnage rating applies close to the truck. As the boom extends, what it can safely lift drops sharply. So a job that seems small can need a bigger truck, or a hydraulic crane, if the truck can't park close. Before you request a quote, measure from the nearest spot a truck can set up to where the load must land, and note the height. Look for soft ground, overhead power lines, trees and septic fields, especially on rural lots around Sherman, Howe and Pottsboro. Power lines have strict OSHA clearance rules; see our crane permit and power line guide.

Boom truck FAQ

How much can a boom truck lift?

Boom trucks are rated by maximum capacity close to the truck, often 17 to 40 tons, but capacity drops quickly as the boom extends. A 23-ton boom truck may only lift a small fraction of that at 60 to 70 feet of reach. The crane company will check the load chart for your weight and radius.

How much does boom truck rental cost?

One 2025 North Texas rate sheet lists a 23-ton boom truck with operator at $155/hour with a 3-hour minimum and a 30-ton boom truck at $175/hour with a 4-hour minimum, plus fuel surcharge and travel. See the cost guide.

Boom truck or crane?

If the load is light to moderate and the truck can park fairly close, a boom truck is usually cheaper and faster. Heavier loads, long reach or tight setups usually call for a hydraulic crane. See crane vs. boom truck for a side-by-side comparison.
