Operated or bare rental?

With an operated rental, the crane company sends the crane and a certified operator and runs the lift. It's what most contractors and property owners book for one-off jobs. With a bare rental you get the machine only, and you provide the operator, rigging and insurance. For construction work, OSHA requires crane operators to be trained, certified or licensed, and evaluated (29 CFR 1926.1427). Compare the two in our operated crane service guide.

What affects the price

Mobile cranes are usually billed hourly with a minimum, and many companies bill travel from the yard and back. Bigger cranes cost more per hour, and the largest ones may need extra trucks for counterweight and road permits. For published North Texas rates and a worked example, see the crane rental cost guide. For how operator and rigger time shows up on a bill, see crane operator rates.

Mobile crane rental FAQ

What is a mobile crane?

A mobile crane is any crane that drives or is hauled to the jobsite and sets up there, as opposed to a tower crane that is built in place. Boom trucks, hydraulic truck cranes, all-terrain cranes, rough-terrain cranes and carry-deck cranes are all mobile cranes.

How much does it cost to rent a mobile crane?

Operated mobile cranes are usually billed by the hour with a minimum, plus travel. One North Texas company's published 2025 rate sheet lists $205/hour for a 40-ton crane and $355/hour for a 100-ton crane, each with a 4-hour minimum. Those are one company's rates, not quotes. See the crane rental cost guide.

Can I rent a mobile crane without an operator?

Some companies offer bare rentals, but then you must supply an operator who is trained, certified and evaluated under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1427 for construction work, and you take on rigging, insurance and responsibility for the lift. For most one-off jobs an operated rental is simpler.

What size mobile crane do I need?

It depends on the heaviest load, how far it must travel from where the crane sets up (the radius), and how high it goes. Send those three numbers and the crane company will size the machine from its load charts.
