What operated crane service covers
With an operated (sometimes called "wet" or "O&M") rental, the crane company is responsible for the machine, its operator and the lift itself. You are responsible for describing the job accurately and having the site ready. It's the simplest way to get a one-off lift done safely, and it's what most contractors in Sherman and Denison book.
Common operated crane jobs
- Steel erection for metal buildings, warehouses, canopies and mezzanines.
- Equipment setting for manufacturers and plant suppliers: machines, tanks, transformers, generators and chillers.
- HVAC and rooftop units on retail, school, church and office buildings.
- Precast, trusses and tilt-up support on commercial and residential builds.
- Tree, sign and pole work where a bucket truck can't reach.
Crane types you may be quoted
Boom trucks for light and medium picks (see boom truck rental). Hydraulic truck cranes and all-terrain cranes for heavier loads and longer reach; they drive to the site and set up on outriggers. Rough-terrain cranes for unpaved, muddy or uneven jobsites, usually hauled in on a trailer. Very large lifts may need cranes delivered with extra counterweight trucks, which adds cost and setup time. Not sure which you need? Compare them in crane vs. boom truck.
Safety and certification
Construction crane work in the U.S. falls under OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC, which covers operator certification, ground conditions, assembly and power line clearance (generally at least 20 feet from lines up to 350 kV unless specific procedures are followed). A reputable crane company will ask about overhead lines and ground conditions before they show up. Our Sherman crane permit and power line guide covers street use and clearances in more detail. Ask for proof of insurance and operator certification before work starts.

Crane service FAQ
Is crane service the same as crane rental?
People use both terms. "Crane service" usually means an operated rental: the crane company sends the crane, a certified operator and often a rigger, and runs the lift. "Crane rental" can also mean a bare rental where you provide the operator.
What does an operated crane rental include?
Typically the crane, a certified operator, fuel (often with a surcharge), and travel billed from the crane yard and back. Riggers, signal persons, spreader bars, man baskets and permits are usually extra line items.
Do I need a lift plan?
For routine picks, the crane company plans the lift based on your weights and distances. Critical lifts (near capacity, over occupied areas, or with two cranes) usually get a written lift plan. Ask the crane company if your job qualifies.
What do I need to have ready on lift day?
A clear, firm, level setup area; overhead lines identified; the load unbolted and ready to rig; weights confirmed; and someone on site who can make decisions. Delays are billed by the hour.
