What the crane company needs from you
- Unit weight: from the nameplate or the manufacturer's spec sheet, for both the new unit and the old one coming off.
- Roof height and the parapet height, if any.
- Distance from the closest spot a truck can set up to the curb or pad where the unit lands. This often decides crane size more than the weight does.
- Rigging points: whether the unit has lifting lugs and whether the manufacturer calls for a spreader bar.
- Site access: parking lot, alley or street setup, overhead lines, trees and canopies.
- Timing: date, time window and whether the building will be open.
Boom truck or crane?
Many single-story retail, restaurant and office units are set with a boom truck parked close to the building. Multi-story buildings, heavy units, units in the middle of a large roof or a setup spot far from the curb can call for a larger mobile crane. Compare them in crane vs. boom truck.
Plan these before lift day
- Roof structure: confirm with your contractor or engineer that the roof and curb can carry a new, heavier or relocated unit.
- Power lines: OSHA sets minimum clearances for cranes near lines (29 CFR 1926.1408). Lines along the street side of a building can force the crane to set up farther away.
- Ground: outriggers put heavy point loads on the pavement. Tell the crane company about soft areas, new asphalt or buried utilities (29 CFR 1926.1402).
- Street or alley setup: in Sherman this may need city right-of-way approval. See crane permits in Sherman.
- Disconnects and curb prep: have the old unit disconnected and the curb adapter ready, so the crane isn't waiting on the clock.
What it typically costs
Most HVAC lifts are billed hourly with a minimum, plus travel. Our crane rental cost guide walks through a worked rooftop-unit example using one company's published North Texas rates, and crane operator rates explains rigger and overtime charges. Grouping several units or buildings into one visit usually saves money.

HVAC crane lift FAQ
Can a boom truck set my rooftop unit?
Often, for single-story buildings where the truck can park close. Taller buildings, heavy units or a long reach from the only setup spot can push the job to a larger hydraulic crane. The crane company decides from its load chart. See crane vs. boom truck.
How heavy is a rooftop unit?
It varies a lot by size and manufacturer. Use the shipping or operating weight on the unit's nameplate or spec sheet, not a guess, and include the curb adapter and rigging if they lift together.
Can the old unit come down in the same visit?
Usually, yes. Removing the old unit and setting the new one in one crane visit saves a second mobilization and minimum charge. Tell the crane company both weights.
How early should I book a crane for an RTU change-out?
A few days to two weeks is common. Many HVAC lifts are scheduled early in the morning, before businesses open and before afternoon heat and wind. Include your preferred date and any time window.
