Most contractors and property owners in Sherman and Denison book operated. It is the fastest way to get a pick done right without taking on the operator, the load chart and the liability yourself.

What happens on lift day

  1. Arrival: the operator confirms the arrival window ahead of time and shows up with the crane, and any rigger or extra trucks that were quoted.
  2. Walk-down: the operator checks the setup spot, ground, overhead lines and swing path.
  3. Setup: outriggers go down on pads or mats; larger cranes may need counterweight installed.
  4. Rig and pick: the load is rigged to its lift points and set, with a signal person when the operator can't see the landing.
  5. Tear-down and travel: the clock usually runs until the crane is back at the yard (portal to portal).

What it costs

Operated cranes are typically billed hourly with a minimum. One North Texas company's published 2025 rate sheet lists $155/hour for a 23-ton boom truck up to $595/hour for a 275-ton crane, operator included, before fuel surcharge, travel and permits. Those are typical published rates, not quotes. Details in crane operator rates and the crane rental cost guide.

The lift checklist: what gets you a real number fast

Crane quotes stall when the numbers are missing. Send these and the operator can size the machine from the load chart on the first pass:

  • Weight of the heaviest pick, from the nameplate, spec sheet or drawings, plus rigging.
  • Radius: the distance from where the crane can set up to where the load lands. This drives crane size as much as weight.
  • Height: roof, parapet or set height, and anything the boom has to clear.
  • Site access: gate width, driveway, alley or street setup, and room for the outrigger spread.
  • Overhead lines anywhere near the setup or swing path. OSHA clearance rules can move the crane and change the size.
  • Soft ground: fresh fill, wet clay, septic fields, pools or new asphalt under the outriggers. Mats may be needed.
  • Rigging: lifting lugs, spreader bar requirements, and whether you need a rigger or signal person.
  • Date and time window, and whether the site is open or occupied.

Crane with operator FAQ

What is included in a crane rental with operator?

Usually the crane, a certified operator, fuel (often with a surcharge) and travel time from the yard and back. Riggers, signal persons, spreader bars, man baskets, mats and permits are commonly separate line items, so ask for each in writing.

Is a crane with operator more expensive than a bare rental?

The hourly number is higher, but the operated rate covers the operator, their certification and the lift planning. With a bare rental you supply a qualified, certified operator, rigging and insurance, and you carry responsibility for the lift. For short jobs, operated is usually the better value.

Who is responsible for the lift on an operated rental?

The crane company runs the crane and the pick. You are responsible for describing the load accurately (weight, radius, height), preparing a firm setup area, flagging overhead lines and buried hazards, and having the load ready to rig.

How fast can I get a crane with operator?

Routine lifts are often booked a few days to two weeks out. Boom trucks and smaller hydraulic cranes are sometimes available same-week or same-day. Call or text (903) 251-2971 with the lift details and your date.

Do operators need to be certified?

For construction work, OSHA requires crane operators to be trained, certified or licensed, and evaluated for the equipment (29 CFR 1926.1427). Ask the crane company for the operator's certification before lift day.
